Hollywood, South Carolina
On the bank of the Toogoodoo Creek in Hollywood, South Carolina, this modern concrete plantation home rises out of the flat and grassy Lowcountry. The clients' desire for something permanent and solid led us to explore the possibilities of cast-in-place concrete, softened to accommodate the harsh Southern light and heat with warm wood-faced roof overhangs, timber trellises, and a double height, South-facing screen porch.
The open plan with a double height central atrium warrants views to the marsh and river beyond from every space in the house. An inclination toward raw
and natural materials and a rich and tactile living environment, enhanced by the exposed concrete, led to decisions to employ stained oak floors, Caribbean
pine doors, mahogany cabinetry, and slate and marble stone finishes throughout. The result is an intimate bungalow positioned in a paramount location
to witness the peaceful tides and tempestuous storms of the South Carolina Lowcountry.
