James Simons Elementary is a partial magnet, neighborhood school with a Montessori-based curriculum. The overall design objectives were to respond to the historic nature of the existing structure in a meaningful way, reorganize the building site to increase functionality establish a significant presence on the urban streetscape, and to provide comfortable instructional areas that accommodate all types of learning.A unique challenge of the project was the preservation and rehabilitation of the historic facades of existing structure built in 1919. The new construction is built behind the historic facade and takes cues from its height, scale, and mass.
